Rollin' High with DJ High Roller

Hailing from Perth DJ High Roller is an exciting new talent bursting into the Drum'n'Bass and Dubstep scenes. His beats get support on Radio One and some big playaz including Kenny Ken, DJ Hazard, Mickey Finn plus many more. He's released tunes on Radical Beats, Second City, Corruptive Records, Deadly Records and has recently launched two Labels of his own Crooked Beats and 4:20 Records. We catch up with DJ High Roller for a lil' chat and you can download his live set from 4:20 Record Launch Party in Perth.

You started a DnB label in 2008 called Crooked Beats. And your tunes get played by Big Playaz such as Mickey Finn, Hazard, Original Sin plus heaps more. That must feel pretty good?

It's great to know that you are getting support from the people who have inspired you. Whether it be through radio airplay or at an event, there is no substitute to getting your name out there better than if it being heard through some of the big names in DnB.

You've toured the UK, USA and Canada. Do you find your sound is more popular over there than here in Australia?

In the UK my sound is absolutely defiantly more recognised than over here, but that said it's the UK, and the Jump Up flavour is massive there. On the West coast USA it's good there in regards to people knowing who I am, my bookings seem to be constant and the Jump Up DnB and Dubstep is in demand - My label statements also confirm the sound is well received there. The only thing is with places like LA with their population you would expect a lot more crew but at an event where it's a DnB only policy, it's very similar to Perth which certainly isn't a bad comparison in regards to our population and to the health of our scene downunder.

Along with Crooked Beats you've recently launched another label 4:20 Records to release Dubstep. How's all that goin?

The 4:20 Records 001 title I had to give to my boy Funtcase from UK. He sent me and my label partner 2 massive tracks (Gorilla Flex/Make Our Day) which have just come out full release. Full focus on dirty grimey dance floor dubstep with this label. 002 will be out shortly featuring big new producer Physical who's also from the UK. On the digital side for 4:20 you can download 420DG001 which is 2 tracks by myself (Jan/Blood Curdler) with a stack more to follow soon, including a big lineup of Aussie talents.

And if you make it over to Melbourne for a gig, what can peeps expect from High Roller?

When I hit the East Coast I'm going to make sure the tremors are felt back home in the West. My sets contain nothing less that absolute alliteration. The weapons that will be
on display will be causing bassline devastation and if the crew over there like their tracks loud and dirty then we are all set. My sets contain usually about 85% of my own workings, with the dubs played being the tunes forthcoming on my labels or affiliated labels.
