DJ Fiction Back to Nature

DJ Fiction has been involved in Adelaide Drum ‘n' Bass/Jungle for well over 10 years. He is a founding member of the Inbound Crew. Who are responsible for some of Adelaide's biggest parties. He also owns Adelaide's only DnB/Dubstep record store Inbound Sound. Fiction, is also a skateboarder. He's put together a lil' skate video called Back to Nature featuring some of the DJ's and MC's who makeup Inbound.  Here's an interview with Fiction and 5min clip from Back to Nature is at Wobble TV.

Inbound been going for 10 years now. That's quite a while. What got you into Drum ‘n' Bass? What brought you to the music? And what has kept you going for so long?

Back in my younger days I was into raving and the sound of the Breakbeat style always sounded more appealing to me. I found myself buying Jungle/DnB records from then on. In 1997 Filter and myself set up inbound and our first event was May 30th 1998. Our scene had a handful of top shelf DJ's who could rock the dance floor as good as some International DJ's at the time. We branded the name Inbound as a quality event rather than relying on an international to get the heads to our shows. Inbound has been given so much support over the years, and from that support we just kept doing what we loved doing. And here we are with a record store to boot as well!! Back to Nature. It's a lil' homemade skate vid. How's that come about?

Well... I have always been a massive fan of skateboarding and skateboarding vids since I was about 9 yrs old. I remember skateboarding to school past the mums dropping their kids off in their cars when I was ten years old. It's something I have loved all my life! I've always been obsessed with skate video's - from the Bones Brigade days when I was young right up until 2009, now days I usually watch at least 1 skate video a day! So for me, when I had a video camera that my girlfriend at the time said I could use I thought I'd try filming some skateboarding. I quickly learnt how hard it is to film skating, so I ended up buying some nice lenses, a directional microphone and a sweet camera which meant my footage would improve. Almost a year after I had started filming I had a knee reconstruction so this gave me an opportunity to spend my time filming the crew instead of trying to skate, which I guess sped up the process of collecting footage. Some of the tricks in "Back to Nature" were filmed over 50 times, due to the quality of the footage or the trick not being perfect!! I must say big ups to the crew who had to put up with me directing them on their skating tricks. Naturally as it's an inbound vid the soundtrack had to be DnB which many people thought couldn't be done, but I feel my selection of tunes has worked well, there are 3 Adelaide tracks on it plus stuff from Klute, Lynx, Survival etc. It was about a year ago when I came up with the title "Back to Nature" as I felt this described the Inbound crew getting away from the DnB scene and getting back into the real world so to speak. I am really proud of myself to have actually put this video together, it's not amazing but it comes from my heart so that's all that matters. I have already started filming the second vid which I hope to finish in less than 2 years this time, and I am working on getting some sponsored skaters on the vid. Anyway I ended up getting approx 13 hours of footage to use for this film, which runs for 22 minutes in total!!

Over the last ten years or so, I'm sure you've seen the Adelaide scene morph and
change. What's been the goods and the bads over that time?

Since day one the scene here steadily grew as I'm sure it did in most places as it was a nice and tight community so people were supportive of all the events and DJ's which were playing at the time. It wasn't until around 2006 when lots of new promoters wanted a piece of this DnB scene that it started to fall apart. There were way too many gigs with average music and average DJ's therefore the crews and punters started to not support everything. We went from our biggest events ever to having some dead shows with multiple internationals in like 6 months, which never really had happened previously. I pretty much saw it occurring in front of me but you can't do anything about it. We just kept at doing the same as way had always and we are still doing it, I'm glad we survived. As for the scene at the moment Adelaide still has the odd bad gig but the good ones have been excellent, plus a lot of newer faces are turning up at the shows which can only help the scene grow and progress. As long as the promoters play their cards right then our scene will benefit which is what we all should want.

Adelaide versus Melbourne Drum ‘n' Bass off. Who'd win and why?

Ha Ha , that's funny. Depends on what you're talking about. We both have some excellent DJ's, excellent promoters, excellent producers, even outstanding drinkers! Maybe one day we should do something completely different, like a poker tournament, lawn bowls or a football match.
